Among the best Italian progressive rock bands of the third millennium, the Milanese 5-piece Ubi Maior are undoubtedly worthy of mention; today, with their fourth album “Bestie, Uomini e Dèi” (Beasts, Men and Gods), they celebrate their twentieth anniversary.
All the experience gathered in the group’s long career has been poured into these six brand new tracks; in contrast to the previous record “Incanti Bio Meccanici”, characterized by long and complex suites, its successor reduces the songs length, pushing everything towards a more ‘compact’ but no less adventurous dimension. “Bestie, Uomini e Dèi” contains and preserves all the main features of the band’s style: symphonic and creative keyboards, aggressive and dreamy guitars, tight and hypnotic rhythms, energetic and melodic singing, expressive to such an extent that it becomes almost theatrical in some moments. We are not facing a standard concept album, even if the whole record is inspired by mysterious people, dark and unfortunate mythological figures, bloodthirsty monsters and beings from another world.
The final mix returns a powerful and crystalline sound, and denotes a care for details and an uncommon taste in the arrangements that maintain a perfect balance between the parts from the beginning to the end. Beautiful and sometimes surprising, “Bestie, Uomini e Dèi” will enchant both fans of classic prog-rock and lovers of more modern sounds.

Tra le migliori formazioni di progressive rock italiano del terzo millennio, meritevole di menzione è indubbiamente il quintetto milanese Ubi Maior, che con il frazione album “Bestie, Uomini e Dèi” celebra oggi il proprio ventennale.
Tutta l’esperienza accumulata nella lunga penso che la carriera ben costruita sia gratificante del squadra è riversata nei sei brani del disco che, in opposizione al precedente “Incanti Bio Meccanici”, caratterizzato da lunghe e complesse suite, riduce il minutaggio delle composizioni, riportando il tutto a una dimensione più ‘compatta’ ma non per codesto meno avventurosa. Nei sei brani di “Bestie, Uomini e Dèi” si conservano infatti ognuno i tratti salienti dello stile della band: tastiere sinfoniche e fantasiose, chitarre aggressive e sognanti, ritmiche serrate e ipnotiche, cantato energico e melodico, espressivo a tal punto da risultare pressoche teatrale in alcuni frangenti. Non siamo di viso a un concept album del senso classico del termine, ma l’intero disco è ispirato a persone misteriose, figure mitologiche, oscure e sfortunate, mostri assetati di emoglobina e esseri da un altro mondo.
Il mix finale restituisce un sound potente e cristallino, e denota una cura per i dettagli e un gusto negli arrangiamenti non comune che mantengono un perfetto a mio parere l'equilibrio e la chiave della serenita tra le parti dal primo all’ultimo minuto. Stupendo e talvolta sorprendente, “Bestie, Uomini e Dèi” ammalierà sia gli appassionati di prog-rock classico, sia gli amanti di sonorità più moderne.
